Yoga is my jam. Every time I say that it makes me giggle. I'm not sure why I think it's so funny but I totally do. AND it's totally true. I'm not big on sitting still. My husband has compared me to the Tasmanian Devil a time or two. That's why I love yoga!!!!!! It makes me simmer down. It makes me clear my mind (which is super hard for me I'm a classic over thinker). Yoga makes me relax my jaws (they are normally clenched). Yes, I am a hot mess! I am a normal woman with more responsibilities than I sometimes think I can handle! I never have enough time! Or at least that's how it feels and what I'm constantly telling everyone!
Yoga is something I need in my life. I have taught in the chair for years. It wasn't until I took a hot yoga class that I realized what I had been missing. I've always exercised. I've ran, done the weights, the aerobics, done it all! But I never felt good after any of it. I have scoliosis and my back isn't made for all of that impact. I could never go as far as the girl next to me and that always made me feel bad about myself. When I took my first yoga class I literally cried into my mat. Yes I know that sounds so dramatic. But it's a true story. It was the very first time I had taken a hot yoga class. There were no mirrors in the room which threw me off at first. I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do. Teaching yoga in a chair is different than these classes and I felt very insecure. Every other exercise class I had ever taken had mirrors, which I would use to make sure I looked like everyone else in the room! As the class progressed I realized that without the mirrors I was totally focused on myself. There were very few times I had to look at the person next to me. I was moving at my own pace and feeling amazing. I was sweating like I never had before (and I have ran a mini marathon!). I felt empowered and confident. There was a girl in the class who when in a crow pose went into a handstand and I wasn't even jealous. I was amazed. I wanted to get myself to the point where I could do that too! (I'm still trying btw!) But anyway, towards the end of class we beagan to cool down and stretch our hips. Thats when I had my dramatic moment lol! I was in a half pigeon pose (if you aren't sure what that is google it and then know that I looked nothing like the picture lol) and the instructor came around and tweaked my hips just a bit. As soon as she adjusted me, the muscle in my back (the one that stays tight 24/7) relaxed and I felt a release of pressure that literally brought tears to my eyes. I was sold. I was, and still am, completely convinced that yoga is for me. It's my thing. It's my jam. I no longer do all that other stuff because it doesn't make me feel good. Listen, I'm not knocking all that other stuff...if you can do it you should because a good step class is a blast...I just can't do it. Now, I was in a heated yoga class. That's another thing I love...heat! My body works better in the heat. When I was a runner I could run my fastest when it was 85 degrees outside. With that said, I realize heat isn't for everyone and we will have other classes that aren't hot. I didn't really plan on going into all of that but I want you guys to know where I'm coming from. I'm 40 years old, and I'm not in perfect shape. I have barriers with my back. I love to eat and that's probably not going to change! However, when I'm taking 3-4 yoga classes a week and I'm feeling like a rockstar I do tend to eat better and I most definitely FEEL better! Maybe, just maybe you will feel better too. At least that's my hope. I hope you come into my studio and have a moment like I did. I want you to find your jam! I want Southern Charm to be your happy place. Somewhere you know you want to be because it makes your body and mind feel so good. Someplace you leave with a smile on your face eager to come back to. So friends, the ones I already know and the ones I've yet to meet, I hope you come over and give Southern Charm a try, I think you will be amazed at what you find. You. You will find you. And nothing is better than finding yourself and your jam!

I have had so many of you wonderful people reach out with questions about where to begin at Southern Charm Yoga. Today I want to tell you a little bit about the Front Porch Choga class and hopefully put some minds at ease! This class is an hour long and is all done in the chair. We stretch. We engage our muscle. We strengthen our core. This is a perfect class to start with if you are not comfortable with getting on the floor. It also gets you more familiar with yoga terminology. So many of you have concerns about not being "fit" enough to take the classes. This class is for you! I have been teaching Choga (Chair Yoga) for many years. I have students anywhere from 50 to 92 years young! I have students that are in wheelchairs, have replacement parts, use canes and walkers and some that only have one limb. It is an absolute joy for me to watch my students grow in this process and become more flexible and aware of their movements. Myself and Kim will be instructing the Front Porch Choga classes and we like to have a good time in class! We are all friends here and we all have our own barriers! We fight the battle together! Come and try this class, make some new friends and see how much better you feel! This class is not just for the ladies, men enjoy this class as well! If you have any questions about this class feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, call my cell at 502-773-0582, message me on FB (Southern Charm Yoga) and I will be happy to help! I want you to feel encouraged! You CAN do this! START HERE! Don't waste anymore time thinking you arent capable of doing Choga! I believe in you and I know you are going to love it!
Hey Ya'll...sometimes I like to blog about what we're doing over here at Southern Charm! It helps to get the word out & make the lovely people who come to our studio a little more comfy!
